Mission

The Max Planck Center DisCoS brings together outstanding researchers from the Department of Mathematics and the Institute for the Foundations of Data Science at Yale University, from the Rényi Institute and the MPI MiS to build a internationally unique center for discrete and continuous structures in Mathematics and Data Science. The interplay of discrete structures on the one hand and continuous structures on the other plays a key role in mathematics itself, as well as for modern applications of mathematics, in particular in data science and machine learning (or as it is often said nowadays "in AI"). This center offers a unique opportunity to unite experts from various mathematical disciplines to jointly build new bridges between the worlds of discrete structures on the one and continuous structures on the other hand.

In a time where more sophisticated mathematical techniques are brought to bear on both data analysis and machine learning, the proposed center will serve as a vital hub for innovative mathematical research - driving fundamental breakthroughs while maintaining a clear pathway to real-world applications. The translation of fundamental mathematical research into the design of algorithms is a key aspect of this proposal. The center unites distinguished researchers across traditionally separated fields: geometry, group theory, graph theory, probability, partial differential equations, data science, and physics. By fostering collaboration that overcomes disciplinary boundaries, career stages, and geographic borders, we aim to tap into the transformative potential that can be found at the interfaces of these diverse mathematical domains.

Focus on Young Researchers and Vivid Exchange
At the core of the activities of the proposed center lies a joint postdoctoral program, and the cosupervision of graduate students. The inter-disciplinary and open environment of the center will shape a new generation of young scientists. Offering unique attractive opportunities we hope to recruit the best people and attract them to the MPG for their training and beyond.

The center activities foster a vivid exchange program between the three partners, involving researchers at all career levels, and attracting further international outstanding scientists as well. The planned schools, conferences and workshops will raise the international visibility of the center, and therefore also of the MPI MiS, and of the MPG.
